National Trucking Week: The People Behind Every Mile

09 September 2026 / Published in Inspiration, News

A truck on the highway may be the most visible part of freight transportation, but every mile represents the work of many people.

A shipment begins long before a driver turns the key. A customer has something that needs to move. Someone plans the load. A dispatcher coordinates the trip. A mechanic makes sure the equipment is ready. Warehouse teams handle freight. Customs professionals manage documentation. Drivers bring all those pieces together on the road.

National Trucking Week is a good time to recognize that entire chain.

One Industry, Many Hands

The scale of trucking in Canada helps put that work into perspective. According to the Canadian Trucking Alliance, trucking moves approximately 90% of Canada’s consumer products and foodstuffs, while the industry directly supports more than 400,000 jobs.

And the connection extends well beyond Canada. Trucks carry roughly two-thirds of Canada’s trade with the United States by value, making professional drivers and transportation teams an important link between businesses, communities, and economies on both sides of the border.

Those numbers are impressive, but they don’t tell the whole story.

Behind them are early departures, night drives, inspections, weather decisions, border crossings, loading appointments, phone calls, maintenance work, route changes, and thousands of small decisions that rarely become visible when everything goes right.

Perhaps that is one of the interesting things about transportation: good trucking is often noticed least when it works best. Freight arrives where it should, when it should, and the next part of someone’s business can continue.

A Chain Built Around People

Trucking has changed dramatically. Today’s fleets use real-time tracking, advanced safety systems, digital logistics platforms, telematics, and increasingly, AI-supported tools. Equipment is becoming safer and more sophisticated, and information moves faster than ever.

But transportation is still fundamentally a people business.

Technology can identify a delay. Someone still has to decide what to do about it. Software can calculate a route. A professional driver still has to manage real road conditions. A system can schedule a shipment, but people communicate, coordinate, maintain equipment, solve problems, and build the relationships behind long-term service.

And at the beginning of that process is the customer.

Our trucks move because our customers have businesses to run, products to deliver, commitments to meet, and people depending on them. Their trust gives our work its purpose.

This Week, Our Thanks Go in Every Direction

National Trucking Week was established by the Canadian Trucking Alliance in the late 1990s to recognize the hundreds of thousands of people working throughout Canada’s trucking industry.

At Transam Carriers, we want to use the occasion to say thank you not only to the professional drivers who represent our industry every day on the road, but also to dispatchers, mechanics, warehouse teams, operations and office staff, industry partners, and everyone whose work keeps transportation moving.

Happy National Trucking Week!
